Stamford 15s advance in World Series

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Stamford 15-year-old All-Star team has overcome several obstacles to advance to the playoffs of the Babe Ruth Baseball World Series.

After starting its final pool play game two hours behind schedule in a game originally slated for Sunday but was postponed due to weather, Stamford came through with a 10-3 victory over the host team Monticello late on Tuesday night to gain a berth in the single-elimination playoff round starting Wednesday. It was Stamford’s second straight win on Tuesday following a 6-4 win over Torrance, Calif., earlier in the day.

Stamford, which also has had to deal with several injuries to key players, earned the No. 3 seed in its pool and will play Bryant, Ark., the No. 2 seed in the other pool, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burlington Field.

NEW HAVEN – Tennis standout Marc Powers of Stamford has experienced a number of high points this summer.

The No. 1 men’s singles player for Yale recently returned from a six-week stay in Great Britain through the Prentice Cup exchange program. During that time, he played on the famous grass courts of Wimbledon.

And now he will be making his doubles debut this week with Nolan Paige of Fairfield at the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament. He garnered a wild card in the singles field and lost to Sergei Bubka of the Ukraine 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of qualifying on Saturday morning.

But talking with him on Friday, he seemed very excited about playing doubles with the 16-year-old Paige, someone he has known for the past seven years through the Stamford Indoor Tennis Academy.

“I’m excited and I’m going to give it my all,” said the 20-year-old Powers. “We’re going to go for it and not hold anything back.”

This isn’t the first time Powers has played at the Pilot Pen. Last year, Powers lost to Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of qualifying for singles. Despite the loss, Powers appreciated the experience.

“To be able to compete with him was very rewarding,” he said. “The biggest difference was every big point, he would win. It was tough but I was able to see what it would take to reach my potential.”

Playing against Rochus carried over into his freshman season at Yale. Powers went on to become the first Ivy League male tennis player to be named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season.

Powers and Paige were grateful for this opportunity and they praised John DeFillippo, the director of tennis at Stamford Indoor, for playing a big role in their development as top-notch players.

“He’s been a huge factor in my game, ever since I was nine-years-old,” Powers said.
